Thursday

Good Morning!  Yesterday was just too busy having FUN.  No time for a blog entry but I'm back in the saddle today.

Isn't this fountain cute?  Spotted it this morning in front of Paul and Barb Suppo's place at 1327.

Looks like it has been a bumper crop year for the cotton farmers.  This field across Cottonwood looks abundant and profitable!  That little yellow crop duster airplane that flies over at all hours of the night and early morning has obviously done his job well.

The streets in the construction area look all packed down and ready for asphalt.

We briefly chatted with this friendly fellow.   He seems very impressed with all the construction that Palm Creek has done.

Dave is hard at work again this morning.  Today he and his assistant are putting on the blue color for the playing area.

The chalk lines are set.

And here comes the color.  We should have some great photos tomorrow when he gets more done.

Watch Don's video:

Here's the crew working on the back fence at the ballfield.

Certainly is looking good.

Still packing down the streets in prep for the asphalt.

Received an email and photos from Will and Marlene Thurlow this week.  They got out of Lethridge Alberta just in time as their neighbor sent them photos the next day.  I truly understand why our Canadian friends are glad to be here and share our warm sunshine!

Brrrr.....and yuck.  I never want to have to drive through snow and slush ever again!  I'll take my hot July heat anytime instead of this.

Hey Folks--Don't forget to check the various club blogs that are being posted.  As the groups return, they'll be keeping up to date.  You can always check the weekly bridge scores too.

Have a GREAT day!

Tuesday

Say Good Morning to Ryan.  He's the man who oversees and coordinates this whole project.  He's proud to report that everything is right on schedule.  Asphalt will start on the streets October 30.  Then he says it's just a matter of touch up projects.

The streets are receiving their layer of AB "stuff" that is the base for asphalt.

Lots of leveling and rolling and compacting.

The area around the bridge is getting filled in.

The ballfield posts are all installed and now they're starting to put up the fence.

Work progresses on the courts.

Dave is obviously just arriving to start his day.  He's CLEAN and not all splattered with coating.

Oh Goodie!  They're prepping the flower beds and getting ready for planing!

I've heard from several people regarding recycling plastic grocery store bags.  They are definitely a NO  NO for the recycle bins!

Sue,
I saw on your blog you were curious why we don't want the plastic bags. They actually will charge us for them if they are disposed of in our recycling bins. The handles on the bags get tangled in the baling and assorting equipment. It actually has and does shut down the machines. So please, do not put the grocery bags in the plastic recycling bin.
Thanks, Lillie

Here's an interesting article from the Arizona Republic newspaper forwarded by Bob Gosh:

PLASTIC BAGS GUM UP PHOENIX RECYCLING

Phoenix has tried for years to persuade residents to stop throwing plastic grocery bags into the city's blue recycle bins.  But despite the city's efforts, many residents continue to toss the bags in the containers, costing more than $1 million a year. And residents who do this may do more harm than good because the city turns around and dumps the plastic in the landfill.

Albert Alvarez, Phoenix recycling information specialist, said he has seen an improvement since grocery stores started Bag Central Station in 2007. Through the program, residents can toss plastic bags in bins at the grocery store so the plastic can be recycled into items such as plastic furniture and decking.

"Plastic bags are recyclable but not in your bin at home," he said. "At the grocery store, the plastic bags stay nice and clean and the grocery store has a buyer for all their plastics."

I thought I was a dedicated and conscience "save the earth" recycler, but I must admit I did not know about the grocery bags.  Am I the only one??

One last parting thought before I close and head out to the patio with a tall glass of iced tea to read the last chapter of my book.  I just received this photo from friend Gerry Daniel as she sits watching her grandson's football game this weekend.  Brrrrrr....from Alberta Canada!  What's that ugly white stuff on the ground??

Now for my favorite part of posting:  the daily cartoon

Monday

We're really seeing the progress out on Cottonwood now as the first layer of asphalt has been laid on the new lane.

The ballfield has received its first haircut!

Fence posts are being straightened and set in concrete.

Say Howdy to Dave.  He's the one-man band that is surfacing our pickleball courts.  We found him mixing up another batch of the green coating that goes on top of the black coating.  He even dipped in his hand for a good friendly photo.

Time to stir up the mixture.

It's really starting to look like courts!

This shows the first black coat and then the next green layer.

Don and I have special permission from Jim Dawson to enter the pickleball area for photos but please do not enter the area for safety reasons.  The company's insurance is very strict about who is allowed access to the area.

Don says this is a picture of him "practicing" so he's ready to watch the first games.

As we were getting ready to leave the area, we saw this fleet of double dump trucks entering.  Whoa.  We immediately turned around to watch the action.

These trucks never even slowed down.  They entered the area following each other in single file and dumped their loads as they passed through.  Then they exited by the back gate heading to their home station to reload for more.

They dump their load out of the bottom as they drive along.  No need to stop.  This stuff is called AB (I think) and will be spread out on the street and then compacted down.  Next stage will be the asphalt.

We noticed that the storage area way at the north end of the property is starting to fill up as residents return.

We spied this new recycling bin over by the trash dumpsters.  Looks like we can start separating the plastic again.  Save our landfills!  Please recycle!

I was surprised to see that they do not want plastic bags.  I wonder why.  Maybe one of our Urban Miners can research and explain why.  (Kent and Steve.....we're waiting for the answer.)

And I always like to close each post with a cartoon.
 Need I say more??

(I won't say this guy's name but it rhymes with Dave Hardy.)
