Activity

Hello again to everyone.  We're seeing more and more activity as folks are returning to our desert paradise.  The October weather is absolutely beautiful although afternoon temps are still in the 90s.  Quite a few vehicles are now in the parking lot that just a few weeks ago was almost bare.

The back nine  is turning its rich green vibrant color and looks beautiful.

The sprinklers are hard at work as we haven't had any rain in weeks.

Happy belated birthday to a dear friend.....Linda Steward.

There's another new restaurant waiting for you if you like Japanese food.  It's called Sho Ga and is located in the little plaza behind Wendys.  Those folks who like tempura or sushi type foods really enjoy the place.

One more interesting tidbit for you.  We found this mud dauber nest affixed to one of the houses we watch.  This has truly been one busy bee as the nest is built by a solitary female.   Just imagine how many trips she has made from the nearest mud puddle.  Puddles are hard to find here in the desert.

It's fascinating to see the inside of one of these so I copied this picture from the internet for you.

Don and I have this little decorative bird house on our patio.....and we have a mud dauber who has claimed squatter's rights to it as she flies in and out on a regular basis.  I imagine she has quite a nest in there by now.  She makes a good tenant as she doesn't bother anyone plus she rids us of a lot of spiders as her main food source.

The Activities Office is officially open as of yesterday so you can stop in and pick up your event tickets at any time.  Also....just FYI for those of you returning soon, our new badges are lengthwise this year but look pretty much the same as usual.  Get your name tag at the front desk and then you can stop at the gate house to get your annual sticker for your car.  You must have your new badge with you to get your sticker.

Have a GREAT day!  .....and remember to SMILE.

Summer Pottery

It's always exciting for the pottery folks when their finished products come out of the kiln.  We  were lucky to be on hand this morning for the grand event.  Special thanks to Suzette Taylor and Julie Wolf for the guided tour.

I've heard conversations about how tricky it is to load the kiln to take advantage of every inch of space but I had no idea how it was done.

Now each piece is carefully unloaded and put safely onto a rack awaiting its proud owner.

Each layer has new discoveries.

These beads will be made into some beautiful jewelry.

Don and I thought this was a grand prize winner!

Julie keeps track of each item and puts the owners slip with the project.

Reaching way down into the kiln to retrieve the bottom pieces is tricky if you don't have long arms.

Sally Stoffel was busy finishing her sunflower.

Plus she made some cute animals for the grandchildren.

Check out this beginning stage of a pumpkin plate.

Here's a finished piece that came out of the kiln this morning.

It seems the pottery room has been a great place for our summer residents to spend time.  Congratulations to all on your great projects.

Ontario vs Saskatchewan & Alberta

Jim and Lenore Weaver just sent these beautiful autumn photos from their Ontario homeland.  Quite a difference from one providence to another.  If you scroll down a couple days, you'll see recent photos from Saskatchewan.  It certainly looks like a big difference in climate.  Thank you to all readers who send emails and photos.  I love hearing from you.

Here's a photo from Clark and Marnie Hoskins in Red Deer, Alberta.  It's pretty.....but I don't want to be there!

  Psychiatrist vs.Bartender ...

Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night.

So I went to a shrink and told him:“I've got problems.
Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.”

“Just put yourself in my hands for one year,
said the shrink. "Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.”

“How much do you charge?”

“One hundred fifty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor.

“I'll sleep on it,” I said.

Six months later the doctor met me on the street.
“Why didn't you come to see me about those   fears you were having?” He asked.

“Well, $150 a visit, three times a week for a year,
is $23,400.00.  A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought a new pickup truck.”

“Is that so?” With a bit of an attitude he said,
“and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?”

“He told me to cut the legs off the bed.  Nobody
   under there now.”

Spoiler Alert for the Bistro

It's so much fun to see familiar faces returning to our desert paradise.  This week I spotted Marion Nelson as she returns to her busy busy job of scheduling our events and activities.  I asked her what exciting project she was working on at the moment hoping to grasp some news.  She is working on a mailbox stuffer announcing upcoming new items at the Bistro.

SPOILER ALERT!!  Do not read below if you don't want to spoil the surprise.

Fresh jumbo cinnamon rolls in the morning

Monday BBQ at the Bistro Patio wil have FRENCH FRIES!  Can be purchased with combo meal or separate side.

We are switching to all natural Hormel meats, and all sandwiches will be made-to-order.

Hurry Back! Here comes the snow.

Brrrr............Received these photos from our Canadian friends today who are anxious to get their suitcases packed and head south.  Travel safely!!

from Lawrence & Sandra Magee, Saskatchewan
Sandra wrote:  Saskatoon broke a 100 year record for the most snow in October. We were going out for dinner with friends last night and before we left the radio was advising no travel in the city....lots of snow and ice.
from Joe  and Bev Guidinger, Saskatchewan
I don't think Joe or Bev will be spending much time on their patio unless it is with shovel in hand.

Our weather is right next to perfect!

TV Upgrade

Further news from Gary Lambert regarding our new TV service:

So far, the upgrade has been proceeding smoothly. By the end of today (Thursday), over half of the Resort will be on the new service. We are still on schedule.
I need to remind everyone that once your portion of the resort is switched, you will need to ‘re-channelize’ your TV(s). You do this by going to the setup menu on your TV, and looking for something like ‘Auto Channel Select’ or ‘Channel setup’, or something to that effect (Each manufacturer calls it something different). Select this and let it run. It will go out and find all of the new digital channels so you can select them. This will be a one-time process for each TV. This need was mentioned in a previous communication, but it was not emphasized, and so far the only problems we are seeing is that residents have not done this, and they have no TV. Once this is done, you should be all set.
The channel guide (Channel 2) has not been updated with the new channels yet. This is NOT part of Dish, so it has to be done separately. Next week after the Resort is fully switched over, we will get the Channel 2 guide updated as well.
Thanks again for your cooperation!!

INTERNET & TV UPGRADE

We received this memo from Gary Lambert regarding the upgrade to our internet and TV service:

h conversi schedule

We will be converting to the new fiber optic system this week. Outages will affect both internet and TV, as they are both on the same cable. The library WIFI and computers will be up regardless in case anyone has a very urgent need. I will post updates through you as the situation unfolds.
From DISH:
Here is our proposed schedule for the cutting over of the fiber nodes:
Monday 10/3- Node location PC-6 (units 668- 924)
Tuesday 10/4- Node location PC-5 (units 925-1088)
Wednesday 10/5- Node locations PC 8 and PC 9 (units 1- 125 and 379 - 666) Southeast section
Thursday 10/6- Node locations PC-1D, PC-3, PC-4 (units 1089 -1785) North Section
Friday 10/7- Node location PC-10 (New Section in north and units 1787 – 1911 and up)
Monday 10/10- Location PC HE-1 (units 126 – 378)
-Customers will need to perform a scan to pick up the new bulk channel lineup.
-Upgraded customers (those with TV receivers) will need to perform QAM scans on their receivers from frequency range 285 – 597 MHz.
-Any internet issues should be resolved with a reboot of the customers modem.
I would project an all-day service window for these locations. Some of these node locations will be affected by powering as we replace nodes before it in the powering chain.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Today we received this update regarding the new park cable TV service:
The first portion of the roll-out went smoothly yesterday, so we are still on schedule. Here is the channel line-up in the system until we can get a more formal one published.
Please forgive the ugly formatting of the TV listing but it was very difficult to copy/paste this information from an email into blog formatting.  A nice clean formal schedule will be published soon.
